How the 12-3-30 workout works

The 12-3-30 is a simple treadmill walk that became popular on social media: set the incline to 12%, the speed to 3 mph (about 4.8 km/h), and walk for 30 minutes.

It's low-impact, needs no skill, and gets your heart rate up through the incline instead of running. That's why so many people stick with it.

How to start

  1. Build up. New to incline walking? Start at 5 to 8% or 15 to 20 minutes, and add a little each week.
  2. Don't hold the rails. Holding on takes the work out of it. Slow down instead.
  3. Plan rest days. Three to five sessions a week is plenty; the calves and shins need recovery.
  4. Stretch after. Calves and hip flexors work hard on the incline.
